Welcome!

We are the Chicago Branch of the Mountaintop Coalition, founded in 2022. Our mission is to support and uplift the voices of BIPOC Chicago Public Schools students interested in studying Latin and/or the Classics.

From the main Mountaintop Coalition Website: "The Mountaintop Coalition was founded in 2018. It is composed of students and scholars of the ancient Mediterranean world and its reception (broadly defined) with a shared interest in advancing the professional goals of Classicists who identify as members of ethnic groups traditionally underrepresented in the field. Such interests will include scholarly approaches to the study of race and ethnicity in antiquity, but the group’s activities will focus on practical issues of diversity, equity, inclusion, and access in professional settings."
Join Our Activities!
We hope to foster an inclusive and supportive community of BIPOC CPS Latin students and allies through:
  • In Person and Virtual Meetings
    • connect with other Latin students across Chicago to build community
    • look at sources not traditionally covered inside the classroom
    • explore the field of Classics and its change/modernization over the last few decades
    • discuss the lasting impact of the ancient Mediterranean on our world today
  • Guest Speaker Presentations
    • Hear from students of the Classics ranging from teachers, classics PhDs, lawyers, etc!
    • Learn more from their experiences studying the Classics in a post-secondary form
  • Elementary & Middle School Outreach
    • encourage students from your elementary school to consider the study of Latin! Visit schools and connect with younger students
    • work on outreach projects! collectively publish an interactive booklet with puzzles and articles about mythology, root words, and Roman culture!
